The great thing about this format of DLC, as Cubed3 touched on in the review of Mandate of Heaven.ĭespite there only being a few additions in terms of the roster of generals and armies, the bonus is that the new campaign start date also changes the circumstances of many of the existing lords available. Now, there has been a great effort to flesh out some of the warlords down there, including the interesting 'White Tiger' Yan Baihu. That side of things does much to rectify what some criticised as a fairly empty part of the Total War: Three Kingdoms map. Therefore, when it came to fan requests, being able start a campaign and see things through his eyes was definitely one of the most requested features in Total War: Three Kingdoms.Īlongside his campaign, is one set in the south of the country, with Sun Ce. From Dynasty Warriors to Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his legend has been told countless times, and each with great fondness by the fans. However, the standout figure who captures the imagination of fans of this historical time period is no doubt Lu Bu - the fearsome man who rode the legendary horse Red Hare, and was said to be worth 1,000 or more men. Whether it is the all-powerful lord of Wei, Cao Cao the heroic Zhao Yun, or even the despotic Dong Zhuo. ![]() It’s not just “easy mode.” It’s “so easy it’s autopilot mode.” It’s a good way to learn the ropes. When it comes to the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history, there are definitely a number of standout historical figures that have caught the eye. This should give you more territory before you start your southward expansion and with Yuan Shu as a “sugar daddy” and your bulwark to the north. Alternatively, keep the Imperial Seal, play your cards right, and eliminate Liu Biao and his cronies. Mechanic: Heroism = gain boosts to satisfaction, recruitment, and upkeep reduction Mercenary Captains can be recruited if you need the extra muscle.ĭilemma = Give up the Imperial Seal to Liu Biao or keep it.įor the last one, you could give it up and start expanding to the south immediately, with Liu Biao acting as a buffer to the north. Starting location: Changsha = nothing close by except minor lords, the passive AI Han Empire, and several deserted settlements that can be colonized. ![]() This is due to his starting location, faction mechanic, and dilemma. The easiest lord for beginners, by far, is Sun Jian. The “easy-recommended” part is a bit misleading. But, because of his start location, he’s more suitable for intermediate players who are already familiar with TW3K. Going with what u/FG_Rasmus and u/jnykmrnous already said, Cao Cao does have some nifty quirks, and it really lets him shine when you use these mechanics right. Just make sure you make use of Kong Rong's unique assignment available to all generals to boost commerce income in Taishan, which you should focus on capturing! Taishi Ci is an absolute monster with his ranged archer abilities. Kong Rong is a strategist, and generally I find campaigns are easier when you start off with strong combat generals, but he does get Taishi Ci, if you choose to accept him, around turn 7. The difficulties for him though if you don't focus on your diplomacy, but remain peaceful, you might be surrounded by a powerful coalition who will decide to squish you. I think it's good if you want to try a different playstyle that makes use of what makes 3K different to other total war games. ![]() Try to make friends with your neighbours and create a huge trade income. A bit of a personal suggestion but I think he can be good for a newbie too, if you want to focus more on diplomacy and 'playing tall', which is focusing on developing your territory more than expanding it. Also his government administration building gives public order, and he has Zhao Yun, who kicks ass, in addition to Zan himself who is powerful in combat. What makes him a bit more forgiving is his position very close to the corner of the map, so you'll be able to establish a clear frontline with a safe territory behind you. You can also just keep Sun Jian alive for another powerful general - his kids are very strong too. If you give up the Imperial Seal, an event that happens a few turns into your campaign, its smooth sailing to do whatever you want in the large, wild southlands.
